EPUB are the French initials for the United Protestant Church of Belgium, the official state-recognized Protestant organization in strongly Catholic Belgium. Bernard is a young pastor there in southern Belgium, a leader in the Protestant Church. He has taken this small church fellowship from 12 people to 120, with a vision to reach out to the poor and chronically unemployed area of Charleroi.
The church dates from the mid- 1800′s; in the late 1990′s they began a modest renovation project, adding a kitchen and new WC, remodeling the Sunday school rooms, and building a covered atrium in the center of the complex. By 2004 they were half done, but out of resources. EuroTeam has served there three times so far, sandblasting the old facade, redoing the Sunday school walls, excavating the courtyard and pouring a new foundation, running the plumbing, water and electrical lines, and building a terrace for the clothing distribution building.
Some of the ministries the church is involved with in the area are: hosting a drug and alcohol abuse meeting, sponsoring a clothing and food give away, youth groups, and an award winning choir.
Description of Project
The entire church building is being renovated. Most of the demolition and new construction is completed. The church needs individuals who can come on organized work teams to work in the following areas:
- Install doorway between sanctuary and courtyard – currently an arch window
- Remove drop ceiling and install a balcony
Weather you have helping hands or professional skills, they are welcome! Workers are needed in the areas of carpentry, masonry, cement, tiling, plastering, structural work, finish work, and general labor.
